HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE AUDITIONS


POLYNESIAN/HULA DANCERS:

    Female Dancers:

  • Pareau/Lavalava/Sarong

  • Coconut Bra (if no coco bra, please wear swimsuit, tube top, or covered strapless bra)

  • Heavy Make-up (Foundation, Lashes, Eyeliner, Blush, Contour, Eyeshadow, Brows, etc.)

  • Flowers and/or accessories

    Male Dancers:

  • Pareau/Lavalava/Sarong

  • Chest Accessories (ti-leaves, shell necklace, accessories, Polynesian jewelry, etc.)

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • A very short dance routine will be taught

  • As a group you will dance it together. You will be given multiple opportunities to learn it and practice it before dancing it together

  • The dance routine will incorporate Basic Hula Steps & Basic Tahitian Steps

*If you do not arrive dressed, there are restrooms on site that you can use.

Please be courteous of any Bishop Museum patrons.

TATTOOS:

  • Tribal/Polynesian Tattoos on MALES are accepted

  • Female dancers please cover tattoos with heavy makeup. Please come with your tattoo(s) covered so that you can demonstrate your understanding of how to do this.

 

 

MUSICIANS:

  • Bring instruments that you are proficient with.  A bass amplifier will be provided for bassists.

  • Aloha or Polynesian attire. Come looking like an entertainer.

  • (Females Only) Stage Make-up so we can see what you will look like on stage (Foundation, Lashes, Eyeliner, Blush, Contour, Eyeshadow, Brows, etc.) Flowers and/or accessories (hei, polynesian jewelry, etc.)

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Perform and demonstrate your music and vocal abilities.  Perform a Hawaiian language number, a number in any Polynesian language, and a Hapa Haole number.  The numbers will be of your choice but, must meet the stated requirements.

  • Perform with Malu musicians to demonstrate your ability to harmonize and compliment

  • Demonstrate your ability to drum (Polynesian), if applicable.

  • Face to face interview.

FIRE KNIFE DANCERS:

  • Pareau/Lavalava/Sarong

  • Hei (Head fresh or artificial accessories)

  • Chest Accessories (ti-leaves, shell necklace, accessories, Polynesian jewelry, etc.)

  • Fire Knife and equipment (NO GAS NEEDED AS BISHOP MUSEUM DOES NOT ALLOW)

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • You will be asked to perform and demonstrate your fire knife dancing abilities to the drum beats provided by our Malu musicians.

  • Demonstrate your ability to entertain as well as fire knife dance.

  • Face to face interview.

*If you do not arrive dressed, there are restrooms on site that you can use.

  • Look your best (come dressed to impress; Polynesian style)

  • Smile! Smile! Smile! Our dancers don't just dance, they entertain.

  • Have fun! Come with an open mind

  • Show us what we can expect from you.

WHAT PAST PARTICIPANTS HAVE TOLD US IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE AUDITION:

  • "That was fun!"

PARKING
2 options.

  1. The parking lot inside the Bishop Museum gates

    *When you go up to either machine (Front of the Museum or the Back) it will ask you for your License Plate #. Once you enter it, it will ask if you have a coupon code which they will hit yes. Enter the code #102718 and it will print the receipt for you to put on your dash.

  2. Street parking

REMINDERS:

  1. Read Audition information so you are prepared

  2. Bringing Guests to watch the audition is OK but they will have to stay seated where advised, remain quiet, and not interrupt the audition.
